When to use it

✓ Use it when

You need third-party software (firewalls, commercial databases…) and want to buy, deploy, and pay for it neatly on AWS.

✗ Avoid it when

AWS already has a suitable managed service → use that service (e.g. WAF instead of running a virtual firewall yourself).

Common uses

  • Run a security vendor's firewall AMI
  • Buy SaaS through your AWS bill
  • Use existing BYOL licenses

What does it cost?

  • Pricing model: At the seller's price: hourly, monthly/annual, or usage-based, plus AWS infrastructure fees if running on EC2.
⚠️ Cost traps

Hourly software on AMIs still charges license fees while the instance runs, even when idle.
