When to use it

✓ Use it when

Microservices whose addresses change constantly need to find each other by name.

✗ Avoid it when

You only need static DNS for a few machines → Route 53 private hosted zone.

Common uses

  • ECS tasks registering themselves so other services can find them
  • Looking up endpoints by attribute (version, environment)
  • Foundation for ECS Service Connect

What does it cost?

  • Pricing model: Charged by the number of registered resources per month and the number of discovery API queries; DNS queries are charged at Route 53 rates.
